{'I could have killed them' - Lawson encounters near miss with F1 marshals
Formula 1 competitor Liam Lawson disclosed he came dangerously close to a life-threatening accident during Sunday's F1 event in Mexico when a pair of track officials darted across the track directly in front of him
The dangerous situation occurred on the third lap when track officials were observed on the circuit as Lawson was getting back on the race following an early pitstop to swap his damaged front wing
Competitor's Live Reaction
Shortly afterward, Racing Bulls driver Lawson communicated to his team engineer saying: "Are you kidding me? Did you witness that? I might have... taken their lives"
"I truly couldn't comprehend what I was seeing"
"I came out on a new set of hards, and then I arrived at Turn One and there were just two guys dashing across the track"
"I came close to striking one of them, honestly, it was so dangerous"
Security Issues Highlighted
"Obviously there's been a failure in communication somewhere but I've never encountered that before, and I can't recall observing that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"
"We can't understand how on a ongoing race track marshals can be authorized to just sprint across the track in such a way. I don't understand the reason, I'm confident we'll get some form of reasoning, but this must never be repeated"
Governing Body Reviewing
The sport's regulatory authority, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), is actively examining the circumstances
"After an occurrence at turn one, the race directors was notified that debris was present on the track at the turning point of that curve" stated the regulatory authority
"In the third rotation, marshals were notified and put on alert to enter the track and clear the fragments once every vehicle had gone by"
"The moment it was realized that Lawson had entered the pits, the directives to deploy marshals were canceled and a caution signal was shown in that section"
"Our inquiry continues what transpired following that moment"
